Supportive Cancer Care

At The Rothfeld Center we understand how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can be to the patient and his/her family. The goal of our approach is to support whole-body wellness, including the immune system, digestion, sleep, energy levels, diet, exercise and spirituality.

Nutrition

Someone once said “You are what you eat” and they were certainly correct. Some medical conditions may be treated effectively with foods and nutritional supplements, with fewer complications and side effects. While we do not prescribe a specific diet, our staff will help to guide you on proper diet changes and choices that will enable your body to handle treatment and use its own defenses against cancer.

Supplements

Many plant substances are powerful medicines. Where single chemically-derived drugs may address only one problem, botanical medicines are able to address a variety of problems simultaneously. Their organic nature makes most botanicals compatible with the body’s own chemistry; hence, they can work gently, and with few toxic side effects. Our clinicians provide guidance on the use of herbs, minerals and vitamins to complement your traditional cancer treatment options. Some recommended supplements include

  • Ester C

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid

  • Calcium

  • Fish Oil (EPA/DHA)

  • EGCG

  • CoQ10

  • Curcumin

  • Transfer Factors

IV Therapy

The IV Therapy program at The Rothfeld Center follows the guidelines of the KUMC/NIH Vitamin C Oncology Study. Given in a high dosage, vitamin C increases peroxide, a potent oxidizing agent, within cancer cells. Cancer cells lack the enzyme catalase, which normal cells use to inactivate peroxide, and thus are selectively destroyed. As it is not possible to attain such high levels with oral supplementation, our patients are given 1-3 hour IV infusions. This creates a high saturation level in the bloodstream leading to the desired reaction in cancer cells. It needs to be emphasized that vitamin C is not a “cure” for cancer, any more than any other therapy is a cure for cancer. No one can guarantee the IVC will work for you. In order for us to use intravenous vitamin C therapy, all patients must have been seen and be followed by an oncologist. Dr. Rothfeld and his staff are not oncologists and want to work cooperatively with their patient's existing cancer treatment team.

Please remember also that IVC works best in conjunction with a diet and oral supplementation, and chemotherapy/radiation if applicable.

Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine is a healing philosophy that is complementary to functional medicine. Meridian theory offers an important understanding of the unity of the body and mind and adds to the Western understanding of physiology. The Rothfeld Center offers two branches of Chinese Medicine as a part of our services.

  • Acupuncture, a method of treatment aimed at unifying and harmonizing the imbalances present in disease conditions, stimulates the immune system and the healing response.

  • Chinese Herbal Therapy – personalized herbal treatments harmonize imbalances present in the body and attune it to the five elements.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle of “like cures like.” Clinical observation indicates that it works on a subtle, yet powerful, energetic level, gently acting to strengthen the body’s immune response and triggering the healing process. Homeopaths believe that the more dilute the remedy (small doses), the greater its potency. At The Rothfeld Center we use homeopathic remedies (i.e. plant extracts and minerals) to stimulate healing and complement your traditional cancer treatment options.
